Appeals

When a case goes to trial, one party will win and one will lose. Oftentimes, the losing party feels aggrieved by decisions made by the trial court, which may have been contrary to the law or factually incorrect. In many circumstances, a party dissatisfied with a trial court’s judgment has an absolute right to take an appeal, seeking review of that judgment before the state’s appellate court. Whether a client is prosecuting or defending an appeal, it is important to have experienced counsel, with knowledge of the appellate process and rules.

Beermann’s appellate attorneys have decades of experience briefing and arguing appeals before the Illinois Appellate Court, the Illinois Supreme Court, and the United States Supreme Court. Our skilled appellate attorneys are well versed with the intricacies of the appellate process and have efficiently and effectively navigated hundreds of appeals throughout all reviewing courts. Each appellate attorney understands what it takes to win on appeal: powerful brief writing, persuasive oral arguments, and a mastery of the trial court record and appellate court rules.

At Beermann, our appellate team works collaboratively with our trial lawyers before an appeal to ensure that our clients’ cases are in the best posture for an appeal.

Our attorneys regularly serve as appellate counsel for individuals in family law appeals before the state appellate courts of Illinois, including the Illinois Supreme Court, both in cases where we represented our client in the lower court and in cases where we have been brought into the case specifically because of our substantial appellate experience. We work closely with trial counsel and our clients to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of potential appeals, and to present the best possible arguments on appeal to maximize the chances for success.
